Hyalite Opal Specimen
Opals are some of the most unique gems found on earth for their wide display of color. Fire opals are revered for their translucent coloring with flashes of red and yellow hues. Lightning ridge opals are a darker variety with splashes of red and green. But of the many opal varieties, one of the most unique and rare versions is hyalite opal. Unlike the others, hyalite opal’s display of magnificence is best seen in the dark.
Hyalite opal contains trace amounts of uranium which cause this stone to faintly glow in a dark room as well as be tremendously bright under shortwave blacklight. An unusual form of opal, hyalite almost always forms in a botryoidaly (bubbly) manner. Its beautiful skin makes it look wet and glossy - a beautiful example of volcanic movement. It's the perfect piece to add to any serious collector's cabinet.
It's important to note that hyalite opal can include trace amounts of uranium. It should NOT be kept in areas where pets or small children can access it. This should ONLY be treated as a museum piece - shown for its beauty and rarely handled.
You will be getting the exact specimen pictured. It measures approx 3" x 1.75".
